Chapter Eighteen

A full twenty-four hours later, after the scene had been processed, the women’s safe, temporary housing arranged so they could later gather statements from them all, and they had investigated – with an unsatisfactory, inconclusive result – Hunt’s death, the doors to Foreshore General Hospital’s emergency room glided open, and Finn and Mia walked in. The brightly lit area was pretty empty, and Finn breathed a sigh of relief. It was bad enough he had to be there at all. He loathed hospitals, having spent a fair amount of time in them over the course of his career. The smell, the sounds, the very reason for their existence bugged him. And he was exhausted. He’d almost be willing to sell his soul for a good few hours sleep.

A mother sat in the corner of the room with a wailing toddler. What he assumed was her husband stood at the nurses’ station filling out paperwork. A janitor mopped the floor near a bank of elevators. An old couple sat a couple rows away from the mother, the wife cradling her arm against her chest.

Yep, he hated hospitals.

“Take a seat. I’ll go get the paperwork done and join you when I’m finished,” Finn said to Mia. He still couldn’t believe she’d insisted on coming with him. But he couldn’t say he was sorry she had. Somehow, it made it a little easier having her with him.

“Okay.”

He watched the gentle sway of her hips as she went over to a row of chairs before striding over to the desk.

“Good evening, sir. How may I help you?” A pretty, young nurse smiled up at him.

“Hi, yeah, I’ here for stitched.”

“What’s the nature of the injury?”

“I’ve been injured on duty – a stab wound.”

The nurse’s smile disappeared. “I’m afraid we’re going to have to report it. We’re required to report stab and gunshot wounds to the police, sir.”

“I understand, but in this case it’s unnecessary as I am law enforcement and it’s already been reported.” He showed her his badge.

As she studied it, she replied, “I’ll have to see a case number then, sir.”

“I don’t currently have one. Can I get back to you on that?”

“Yes, of course. Have you been here before?”

“No.”

“No problem. Just fill in these forms for me, please, and I’ll open a folder for you.”

The father of the screaming toddler accidentally bumped into Finn, and Finn grunted in pain.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” the frazzled man asked.

“No harm, no foul.” Finn smiled around gritted teeth.

“As long as you’re alright,” the man said as he dashed away.

“Are you really okay, sir? You’re very pale.”

Clutching his side, Finn gave her the same strained smile. “I’ll survive.”

The nurse indicated a small cubicle. “You can take a seat over there and fill the forms in. You look like you’re about to keel over, and I’d prefer you didn’t.”

He laughed. “Duly noted, ma’am.”

Finn ambled over to where she’d pointed and gratefully sank onto the chair. He would rather die than show weakness, but God it felt so good to just sit for a moment.
